Take Time To Improve Health. By taking a few minutes to answer questions about health and health care experiences, Delaware county residents can play an important role in improving local health care services.
PHILADELPHIA, PA, June 28, 2004 — Over the next few months, Philadelphia Health Management Corporation (PHMC) will be conducting the 2004 Southeastern Pennsylvania Household Health Survey, a major telephone survey to examine the health and health care experiences of Southeastern Pennsylvania residents. Approximately 10,000 households throughout the region will be randomly contacted by telephone and asked questions about health screenings, use of health services, health insurance, and personal health behaviors, among other topics.
All of the information collected is completely confidential. Survey information will be used to plan and improve health services for residents of Delaware County, as well as Bucks, Chester, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties. Hospitals, government agencies, universities, managed care organizations and others will use information from the survey to assess community health needs, address community health concerns, and plan and evaluate programs.
Previous Household Health Surveys found that:
- In Delaware County, 56.7% of adults are overweight or obese and 37.5% of children are at-risk of obesity;
- More than nine out of ten adults in Delaware County feel that they belong and are a part of their neighborhood (91.7%) and more than two out of three report that their neighbors are always or often willing to help them (67.2);
- One out of ten children in Delaware County have asthma (9.8%). Delaware County children who are poor are more likely than non-poor children to have asthma (12.9%);
- In Delaware County, 12.6% of older adults report signs of major depression, yet only 6.8% of older adults have been diagnosed with a mental health condition;
- More than one out of four adults have a chronic condition (26.5%);
- Greater than half of adults in Delaware County report that they exercise regularly (51.8%);
- In Delaware County, 14.2% of households contain a firearm, and one out of four of those firearms are kept loaded or unlocked (26.1%).
